Checklist Extension for Azure DevOps

Reusable checklist templates in work items, so that "definition of done" and release steps never disappear.

Many organizations ran a lot of quality and compliance "in minds": code review agreements, test steps, security checks and deploy verification were scattered throughout wikis and tickets. The result was recognizable: missed steps, varying interpretations of "done", and afterwards discussions during releases.

FJAN IT built an Azure DevOps checklist extension that integrates checklists directly into Azure DevOps work items. Teams can apply one or more checklist templates per work item type (eg bug, user story, task), so that the same standard is returned to every place. Templates are easy to manage and customize, including quick reorganization of items for variants per team or product.

During implementation, everyone sees at a glance the progress via a clear Progress indicator. Checklist status and content are stored as Markdown in a custom work item field, so that the data remains usable for reporting, exports and existing processes. Performance has been chosen for "Smart Saving": it is only stored if something actually changes.

An important requirement was traceability. That is why the solution connects to the existing Azure DevOps Field History: changes to checklists can be found in the Audit Trail, which helps with compliance and incident learning or release problems.

Result: fewer manual checks, more predictability in lead time, and a team that can deliver consistently without extra layers of meetings or checklist ping-pong.
